Rosh Chodesh — meaning “head of the month” in Hebrew — is the ancient Jewish holiday of the new moon, known as a sacred time for women.
We believe this practice is the medicine our modern world needs!

Rosh Chodesh invites us to slow down and mark a new beginning. Just as the moon renews itself each month, we’re reminded that we, too, can start again. The new moon is a time for setting fresh intentions and realigning with what matters most.
The practice of Rosh Chodesh, marking time with the new moon, appears in Torah as the very first commandment given to the Israelites leaving Egypt! (You'll find it in Exodus 12:1-2.) By the Middle Ages, it was known as a monthly women's holiday. Today, this holiday is often celebrated by gathering with other women to learn, connect, and be held in community.
Rosh Chodesh is for women, and for everyone. While the entire Jewish community was instructed to observe Rosh Chodesh, women have a particularly special connection to this holiday. According to the commentary Pirkei d'Rabbi Eliezer 45:4: “The Holy One of blessing gave the women their reward... That they will be the keepers of the new moons.”
At The Well's events and gatherings are typically open to women and nonbinary folks. Our resources, including our Moon Manuals and other downloads, are a source of wisdom for all.
